Made by Pade Giveaway!

Hello, friends!  It's been quite a while since I've hosted a giveaway.  I am so excited to host this one for a dear friend who I worked with many years ago.  I'll let her introduce herself and tell you a little bit about her craft.  See below for details on how to enter to win one of her awesome crossbody bags!

*******************************

Hi! My name is Patty Reali, and I have an Etsy shop named "Made by Pade." The name comes from a nickname I accrued in college - one of my roommates had a younger sister who was in first grade and wrote her a really cute letter. It read, "Howdy dude Torri (My roommate)! Hows life at the aprtmt (apartment) and how is it with Vike (Vicki - other roommate) and Pade (me!)?" To my college friends, I have been "Pade" ever since. So, when I started my Etsy site, this seemed the perfect name!

I have loved creating things for as long as I can remember. My parents taught me to sew when I was very young, and I spent some time making counted cross-stitch and other hand-stitched items. My crafting went dormant for a while in high school, but in college I took up knitting and also hand-sewed my first quilt! (Still have it - it's a bit of a mess, but has lots of sentimental value.)

In more recent years, I have made clothes for my children, sewn baby carriers (a life-saver! Any of you with young children who have never used a carrier of any kind should look into it), and made purses for myself and as gifts for friends and family. I have also recently taught myself to crochet, which is great fun, since I can do it any time and any place!

On my site, you will find a collection of purses, zipper pouches, hand crocheted shawls and scarves as well as several other hand-crafted items. I hope you enjoy checking them out, and one lucky winner will get to choose his or her favorite crossbody bag!

How to Enter:

Jane here.  Usually when I host giveaways you are only allowed to enter once.  This time, you can enter twice...

one entry if you you check out her Etsy store here and come back to tell us in the comments which is your favorite item...

and

one entry if you like her facebook page here (and tell us in the comments that you did)

or

you can just choose one of these for one entry:-).

I (Jane) will randomly choose one winner sometime this coming Friday and announce it here.  Make sure to leave your first name or initials so I can identify you as winner.  If you win, you will need to email me so I can pass your contact information and crossbody bag choice to Patty.  Happy entering!

Best of luck to all!

Well, I cannot say thank you enough- for helping to share about the discounted e-book ($4.99 today- the last day of the discount) and for sticking by me when things got confusing.  I received so many email of grace and encouragement.  You all are so sweet.

Not only was my cookbook the #1 Best Seller in the Kindle Store: Cookbooks, Food & Wine for a few hours (on Amazon)...

but it also held at the top of the Canning & Preserving category for most of the week! I did not expect this- a friend had to point it out!  I should have expected it of you all, though.  Thank you:-).

On to the winner!  I counted each way you shared on all the related posts and selected a winner randomly. The winner is...

I did post about this on my Facebook account and several friends were interested. I hope it generates some business for you. I really enjoy my hard copy. :)

Tattler Reusable Lids Winners!

It was so much fun to read all your comments- many of you have been canning your whole lives, others are brand new at this and then there are those of us who are in the middle.  Of those who left a comment to enter, we have 1,548 years of canning experience between us!

While I watched my mom can growing up (and distinctly remember the smell of stuffing cukes, garlic and dill into jars) I didn't begin canning on my own until 2003.  My first few projects were applesauce, wineberry jam (very seedy) and stewed tomatoes.  I started out slow but then, like many of you, I caught the canning bug and for a time, canned almost anything I could get my hands on.  But as the years went on and I learned what our family loved (and didn't) and as I've had less time, I've streamlined our projects.  While we do a smaller number of projects now, we do much bigger batches. As with many things in life, canning practices ebb and flow with the demands of life.  So whether you do a lot or a little- you're doing just fine.

On to the winners!  The two randomly chosen winners who will each receive a dozen regular and wide mouth Tattler Reusable Lids are...

4 months. Apricot jam, apricot rosemary jam, gooseberry sweet & sour sauce, tomato soup, applesauce, and mango puree. Not bad for my 1st year.

and

I've been canning since I was a child with my grandmother- so at least 30 years. Every summer we would pick raspberries in my grandmothers back yard and can jam. But we used wax to seal them. I learned to can with normal lids- not wax- about 10 years ago. And really got into canning about five years ago.

Congratulations!!  Please email me (thyhand123@gamil.com) your name and mailing address and the lids will be sent right out to you.  A big thank you to the Tattler folks for the giveaway!

For those of you who have Swagbucks available, you can also find these lids on Amazon (Tattler Reusable Canning Lids).

Thank you all for entering and have a wonderful weekend!!

Tattler Lids: Notes for Next Year & A Giveaway!

This giveaway is closed.  Please see who won here.

You can read about my first experience with Tattler Reusable Lids here (Part 1) and here (Part 2).

After reading my posts, the president of Tattler Lids, Brad Stieg, contacted me via email to offer some advice regarding my results.  After exchanging a few emails, we spoke on the phone.  It was extremely helpful to talk through the process and my experience with the person who knows these lids best!  I was happy with my final results (especially for my first try) and have the sense that I have a pretty good handle on their usage going into next year.  Brad was not as happy about my results- he knows these lids perform even better and therefore wanted to give me some further advice to ensure even better results next year.

After talking with Brad, here are some streamlined concepts I want to remember for next year's canning projects:

*  There are two times that you tighten the metal ring on each jar when canning with Tattler Lids- once before it goes into the canner and then again after it comes out.  The "before" needs to be significantly looser than the "after" and is the "turn" that is most different than using metal lids.  The ways I want to remember this "before" metal ring adjusment are as follows...

~ Aim for the loose end of the finger-tip tight spectrum.  The definition of "finger-tip tight" might mean slightly different things to different people, but if you can imagine everyone's definitions of finger-tip tight, aim for the loose end of that spectrum.  One way to get a sense of this tightness, according to Brad, is to look on the top of the Tattler Lid at the space between the metal ring and the lid as you turn the metal band.  When the space closes between them and the metal band comes against the Tattler Lid, stop.

~ Another way to familiarize yourself with this concept is to place water in a jar, place a Tattler lid on top and then a metal ring.  Then turn it upside down over your sink.  If no water comes out, loosen the metal band slightly and try again.  Keep doing this until it starts to leak water.  Then tighten it slightly- just to stop the leaking.  Note how tight the band is on at this point by slightly loosening and tightening the band to get the feel for how loosely the band is threaded.  Aim for that when tightening the metal ring before putting your jar in the canner on canning day.

~  If you happen to make the metal band too tight before placing it in the canner, it can lead to a doming effect that can mess with your sealing success.  If a jar comes out of the canner domed up instead of dipped down (the lid's natural state) it means you tightened it too tight.  Air was not able to escape and pressure is trapped inside.  This can happen to metal lids, too, and can mean a sudden release of pressure that can make hot contents escaping, causing a burn.  Looser is better.

*  As soon as the jar comes out of the canner, tighten the metal ring to the tight end of the finger-tip tight spectrum.  This means (with a towel, of course, because the jar will be hot) using both hands and securely making the band press down on the lid.  No need to crank down as hard as you can.  Just tighten it down so the metal band presses the plastic lid firmly into the rubber ring.

* Watch Brad's own very helpful video. I watched a couple other videos on their site before canning applesauce, but missed this one.  It's the most helpful one in my opinion.  It can be found on the front page of their website or can be watched right here:

If you're new to canning, I recommend learning on Tattler Lids right from the start.  They're no more difficult to get the hang of than metal lids are for new canners.  If you can learn from these from the start, you won't have to make adjustments to your canning practices later.

If you're a veteran canner, I recommend learning how to use Tattler Lids.  Friends, we can and do learn new tricks all the time.  We learned how to can in the first place didn't we?  One reason I can comfortably recommend them is because of the quality of customer service available.  These folks believe in their product and the president will even patiently wait when asked to hold while you console a screaming child.  Why do they always act up when we're on the phone?

Part of me is glad every year that the canning season is over.  That's a pretty large part of me, actually.  But I'm already having a little fun setting aside my Tattler Lids and rubber rings after they come off our applesauce jars.  Those lids will end up on jars of tomato sauce, peaches, salsa and more- not in the trash.

Nice.

Giveaway! TWO lucky commenters will each win a box of a dozen regular sized Tattler Lids AND a dozen wide mouth Tattler Lids thanks to the generous Tattler folks.  To enter, leave a comment telling me how many years you've been canning (zero is a valid answer!). Please one entry per household.  It is most helpful if you can leave me your first name or some initials so I can identify you if you win.  I will draw two winners randomly on Friday afternoon.

Happy entering and I'm so curious to see how many years of combined canning experience we have between us!

Also, I am having  SO MUCH fun giving away cookbooks!  I've given 5 (make that 6!) away so far- read here for more details. Pin It

Cookbook Winners!

Well.  It was such a treat being able to read about what you all did in August.  Some of your comments made me tired- gracious me!  Some almost made me cry.  You all are amazing.  I know I've said this before but I truly think I have the nicest readers around.  It is only once in a blue, blue moon that someone leaves me an unkind comment.  It's very rare.  And that in itself is rare compared to what I've heard other bloggers have to deal with.  Maybe you all are just too polite to complain.  But more likely it's because you're awesome.  Thanks for making blogging so much fun!!

On to the winners!  The two people who have won 7th printing, clear-plastic-cover copies of the Thy Hand Hath Provided Cookbook are...

Harvesting the garden, weeding, canning, weeding, trying out my new dehydrator, more weeding!! Made lots of salsa from our great tomato harvest, and lots of applesauce from our apple trees - lots more apples and pears coming the end of the month. Covering plants when the temps dropped in the 40's for a few chilly days in August. We are back in the 90's but Thursday's low is supposed to be in the 40's again. Crazy MI weather. We are blessed to be able to make it to retirement and have the time (not always the energy) to do the things we love. God is good and we are blessed. Herbielady

and

August went by so fast, I'm not sure what I did! Well actually, I spent a lot of time preserving--canning, baking, cooking, freezing. All good stuff. I also spent time slowing down a bit. Thank you for this contest, I'd love to win a copy of your cookbook. Welcome back!

Congratulations!  Please email me (at thyhand123@gmail.com) your full names and mailing addresses and I'll send your cookbooks out right away:-).

If you didn't win, don't be dismayed!  We still have about 70 of these clear-plastic-cover copies left.  So, if you'd like one, either for yourself or a gift, please go here and when ordering, make a note that you'd like a clear-cover copy!

Have a wonderful weekend friends.  It's cooling down a bit here...I wonder when we'll start up the wood stove and put the garden to bed....

1000th Post Cookbook Giveaway!

This giveaway is closed and the winners have been contacted.

According to Blogger, this is my 1000th post.  Who would have thought I'd have 1000 posts worth of things to say (actually, anyone who knows me well may not be surprised)?!

This blogging experience has morphed over the years.  It began as a way to keep out of town (and state) family up on what we were doing and to keep a record of our experiences (and it remains this for us).  Then, people I didn't know started reading it and, to be honest, it felt kind of weird at the time!  Over the past five years there have been times when I tried to anticipate what the readers would like to read but for the most part I've stayed true to letting this space follow where my head and heart lead, asking God to use me to encourage others.  That's when I enjoy it the most.

During my August hiatus I discovered something.  I need breaks as much as I need blogging.  And so, I'm planning another month long hiatus in December, another in the spring and another next August.  But, oh, how I miss being away on these breaks!  And, so....

The Giveaway:

To celebrate this (ridiculous) number of posts and the fact that we're back together again, I am giving away two (2)  of my cookbooks this week.  And, lucky for all of us, the printer made a slight (albeit a good) error and this 7th edition comes with a clear plastic cover to help protect it from spills.  The two giveaway copies have this cover!  If you'd like to order a copy, please note in your order that you'd like a clear plastic cover and my shipping manager (the always lovely, Kathy) will make sure you get one at no extra cost:-).  It's never too early to start Christmas shopping!  Don't forget you can also buy an e-version for your Kindle or computer if you prefer.

To Enter:

In the comments, please tell me what you did during the month of August.  One entry per household, please. Please leave me your first name or your initials so I can identify you if you win.  I'll randomly select two winners this Friday afternoon.

Have a wonderful day!

Idea Book for Gardeners Winner!

Wow!  I thought you all would love this book and you confirmed my suspicions with all your entries.  And, oh!  I could hear and feel your pain through your garden dilemma comments.  How is it that we can love something so much even though it makes us so crazy at times?!?!

I could totally relate to so many of your concerns and I'm going to devote an entire post next week to addressing some of the issues you mentioned and show you where I go to get my organic solutions to gardening problems.  I'm also going to rock. your. world. with something else garden-related so stay tuned.

Okay! Back to the exciting business at hand.  I just had this book outside with me in the garden the other day and now I get to say...the very lucky winner randomly chosen to winner Herrick Kimball's Idea Book for Gardeners is...

Janet who wrote:

Bugs, weeds, and birds eating the fruit and vegetables. Wish we could get them before they did.

Thanks

Idea Book for Gardeners Giveaway!

This giveaway is now closed.  Go here to see who won.

I get a lot of email requests to endorse different products, write reviews and host giveaways.  Everything from bow ties (yes, indeed) to scrap-booking software to homeschool curriculum.  While I would love to help everyone, I politely turn down almost all of these requests.  Often, the items in question don't have anything to do with what I write about here but even when they do, I hesitate to promote things that I don't already love and/or that would make you, my dear readers, feel like you must buy something.

All this said, when I was contacted by Herrick Kimball about his book, The Planet Whizbang Idea Book for Gardeners, I was intrigued.  First of all, I've used the word 'whizbang' more than a time or two in my lifetime but have rarely heard anyone else use it.  Secondly, his book appeared to be right up our alley.

"An eclectic selection of inspiring project plans, useful tips, and how-to advice for people who enjoy growing their own food."

This isn't a beginner's gardening book that tells you how to plant each vegetable.  This is a book for folks who are already fairly established in garden routines and might be ready to try different approaches and techniques to improve yields while reducing labor. In addition to Kimball's own tried and true techniques, he includes some adaptations of old-timey methods, simplifying them into easy instructions.

When it came in the mail, it literally took me a few days to really get my hands on it because Jamey confiscated it immediately.  And devoured it.  It no longer looks like a new book.  It looks like a used book because it's been being used!

The chapters that have gotten the most attention from us so far are listed below:

~ No More Tomato Cages

~ Bush-Planting Raspberries

~ How to Grow Strawberries of the Largest and Finest Quality

~ How to Make and Use Solar Pyramids

In fact, while some of Kimball's ideas will have to wait until next year, we've already implemented his suggestion of how to support tomato plants (we've abandoned our tried and true method of the Florida Weave for the year to give one of the methods he suggests a try).

Other things I must mention are that he has illustrated the book himself and the drawings are excellent- both in quality and the way they show so clearly in images what he's explaining.  Also, all throughout the book are tucked helpful and fascinating quotes from all generations of gardeners and almanacs. Two of our favorites are...

"Odd as I am sure it will appear to some, I can think of no better form of personal involvement in the cure of the environment than that of gardening.  A person who is growing a garden, if he is growing it organically, is improving a piece of the world.  He is producing something to eat, which makes him somewhat independent of the grocery business, but he is also enlarging, for himself, the meaning of food and the pleasure of eating."
- Wendell Berry

"The first supermarket supposedly appeared on the American landscape in 1946.  That is not very long ago.  Until then, where was all the food?  Dear folks, the food was in homes, gardens, local fields, and forests.  It was near kitchens, near tables, near bedsides.  It was in the pantry, the cellar, the backyard."
- Joel Salatin

All this to say, both his book and his website, The Deliberate Agrarian, are worth checking out.  And, Kimball has generously offered a copy of his book to one lucky reader!  Thank you, Kimball!

To Enter:

Leave a comment below letting me know what one gardening issue/problem you wished you had an answer for.  I can't promise the answer will be in Kimball's book, but maybe another reader will reply to your comment with a suggestion.

In your comment, please leave me your first name, nickname or initials so I can identify you if you win.  Only one entry per household.  I will randomly draw and announce a winner on Friday afternoon.  The winner will need to email me their mailing address which I will pass on to Kimball who will then mail you your book!

In the meantime, go here to find out more about the book, including a full list of the chapter titles.

P.S.  We were gifted a copy of this book to review however we liked.  As you can tell, we liked.  :-)

Story Starters (and Kaleidograph) Giveaway!

This giveaway is now closed.  Go here to see who won.

Please forgive the blurriness of my photographs below- it was a dreary day outside.  The cards themselves are beautiful, crisp and clear!

Do you ever wish you had something to keep your children occupied while waiting at the doctor's office or in the car on a long trip?  Ever wish that you could think of something that would actually help you engage your child and see inside their little minds instead of just letting them watch the waiting room cartoons or DVD player in the van?

Story Starters do just that.  While you could come up with story starter scenarios yourself to occupy you and your little ones, sometimes us moms don't feel all that creative when we're waiting in line or trying to keep everyone happy in a waiting room.

Well, our friends over at Red Hen Books and Toys wanted me to introduce you to these cards AND offer two sets  in a giveaway!

The Super Story Starters (shown on top in the photo below) are larger and include illustrations and simpler scenarios- best for preschoolers, in my opinion.  The Original Story Starters include more detail and inspire the imaginations of older elementary school children.

Opportunities to use these cards abound- at restaurants while waiting for your food, at bedtime, with your grandchildren, at the dinner table, in the car or on a plane, on a hike, or around a campfire.  They can also inspire art projects, writing exercises, dress-up time, and putting on plays with friends.

Our kids really enjoy them.  We broke them out on a rainy Sunday afternoon.  Miriam opted to "read" her cards just like the big kids and ended up telling us her own stories (very cute).  She didn't want anyone to help her read her card.  She wanted to do it all by herself.

Red Hen Books and Toys is making this giveaway even better by also offering up two Kaleidographs as well!  You can read our family's impressions of the Kaleidographs here.

If you'd like a chance to win a set of Story Starters or a Kaleidograph, read the instructions below carefully!  Be good listeners, please!:-)

To Enter:

Please leave me a 3- PART comment below.

1) Tell me what you are entering to win (choose one): Super Story Starters (younger kids), Original Story Starters (older kids), or a Kaleidograph (please specify Flora or Crystal).

2) Let us know when you'd like to use these items with your kids or grandchildren (in what settings).

3) (My favorite part!) What game do you remember loving as a child that you wish you could introduce to your kids?

Please only one entry per household.  Please leave your initials or some way to identify yourself in your comment.  I'll randomly choose 4 winners on Friday (two will get Story Starters and two will get Kaleidographs).

Happy entering and thank you, Red Hen Books and Toys!

P.S.  My family was given a set of each kind of Story Starters to try out prior to this giveaway.  I like to know what I'm talking about:-). Pin It

Let me just say that I have the most amazing readers!  You all floored me in your (128) comments/entries.  I mean, I knew you all were awesome, but oh! the amazing-ness of each one of you!  So many of your goals resonated with me.  *I* need to be more patient, spend less time on the computer, and reach out to others more.  And those of you traveling and serving in other countries and adopting foster care children and taking in new foster care kids?  You all are living my dreams!  And those of you aiming to reign in spending, grow more food, do with less- you all are going against the grain and being so very brave!

Life is hard.  We are not meant to thrive here (physically) apart from our Creator.  We're not meant to feel at home here.  Living that balance of knowing this world isn't our ultimate home and yet trying, with all our being, to make this world a better place- through our families, friends, neighborhoods, environment, etc, is SO important and takes such energy and courage when the alternative- trying to fill ourselves with bad food and way too much TV (escape! escape!)- is so very tempting sometimes.

So, anyway.  I just needed to say that- you all are great.  And this is going to be a great year.  I can feel it!Down to business!  The three randomly chosen winners are...

I would love a copy. For the new year, we're cleaning up our diet. ~Jill

You are on the right track, going to bed late, late does get you into trouble. Walking, cutting down on my food intake and clean the house more. God Bless.

I would love to win a copy of your book since meal planning is one of the things I am working on this year. ~ Becky S.

Congratulations!  Winners, please email me at thyhand123@gmail.com and give me your full name and mailing address and I'll personally mail your cookbooks to you.

If you didn't win and would still like a cookbook, please go here to place your order.

Have a wonderful first weekend of 2013!

Bright and Shiny (In Three Parts)

That's what a new year should be- bright and shiny, right?

Part One: If I could snap my fingers my house would be deep-cleaned and organized.  The kids' rooms would have all the gifts in just the right spots in just the right containers and put away when they're done being played with.  All the Christmas decorations would be packed neatly in boxes labeled with their contents.  The fridge would be cleaned (inside and out), cabinets wiped out, school supplies organized, cluttered piles dealt with and surfaces vacuumed and dusted.

Can your fingers do that?  Mine can't.  Therefore, to achieve all this before school starts back up blood, sweat and tears will be required, but it's my goal anyway.  The kids are distracted by gifts and the snow outside, so it may actually be feasible.

Then again, the scratchy throats we have could be the start of the bug that was knocking out extended family while we were still with them.  If that's the case, forget Part One completely.

Part Two: I have goals for the new year.  I don't like calling them resolutions.  I just want to start the year out right and hope that I can develop habits that will last.  Here are a few:

1) Go to bed at a reasonable hour- like 11:00 pm.  I'm a night owl and it's been getting me into trouble- I'm tired during the day (thank goodness for coffee) and I tend to get hungry late at night when I shouldn't be eating.

2) With our weekday evenings free of commitments the rest of the winter, I hope to get up on that blasted treadmill three evenings a week right after supper and walk, walk, walk- hopefully shedding those pounds I gain every fall when I go from being active in the summer to sitting at a table teaching in the fall.

3) I want to allow space for God to show me what's next.  My calendar is open and so is my heart.  I want to be ready for whatever might be down the road, good or bad (I know that may sound morbid).  I want to allow for quiet times for listening, study and prayer.  I don't want to miss any of His plans.  They're so much better than mine.

Part Three: Over the break, I caught two errors in my cookbook.  I'm baffled by it because both myself and my editor were over it again and again and again before deeming it ready to sell.  If you've already purchased one, please note these two errors and make the corrections.  I am so, so, very, very sorry about this.  I know some of you purchased them as gifts for others.  If this was you, please forward the recipients this information please.

1) On page 128 (Peanut Blossoms), I failed to tell you to add the dry ingredients to the wet.  So, toward the end of the first paragraph of method, just before the sentence "Set the cookie dough aside", please add this sentence, "Slowly add the dry ingredients and blend well."

2) On page 122 (Chewy Chocolate Cookies), it should read "8 tbsp. (1 stick) butter", not "8 ounces (1 stick) butter".

While this is not bright and shiny, setting things right is (even though I'm sick about it).  By the way, any future orders will have a little note inside from me noting these corrections until the next printing when the errors will be corrected.

On that note!  I have a gift for you!

As an apology and in honor of the New Year of 2013, I will be randomly choosing three of you lovely readers to receive a copy of my cookbook (hopefully you still want one!).  To enter, leave me a comment telling me what new thing you plan to do/change in the new year. Please leave your first name or your initials in your comment so I can identify you if you win.  Only one entry per household, please.  I'll announce the winners on Friday afternoon!

*This giveaway is closed.  Go here to see who won.*

Happy New Year, friends.  May it be bright and shiny in the way you need it to be!

Love,
Jane

Photograph Winner!

I'm so excited to announce the winner of our giveaway.  Before I do, I want to tell you that my brother is very appreciative of your comments and feedback.  And so am I.  Thank you, friends.

Also, I want to tell you that he really wanted to offer some kind of discount to those of you who didn't win, but that isn't possible on his site.  So, INSTEAD he is doing something really cool.  Until the end of the year, he will donate ALL his profits (20 % of the purchase price) from any purchases to Serving His Children, an amazing cause in Uganda.  They take in severely malnourished infants and children who often the local hospitals have even give up on.  They take these children and their mothers in and nurse the children back to health, all the while teaching the mothers how to continue nurturing their little ones.  PLEASE visit their site and take a look at the amazing work they do.

So, to recap...if you didn't win today, don't dismay!  Consider buying a piece for yourself or as a birthday or Christmas gift (before the end of the year) and know that you are helping children in desperate need of very special care.

Without further ado, the winner is...
