Tattler Lids: Notes for Next Year & A Giveaway!

This giveaway is closed.  Please see who won here.

You can read about my first experience with Tattler Reusable Lids here (Part 1) and here (Part 2).

After reading my posts, the president of Tattler Lids, Brad Stieg, contacted me via email to offer some advice regarding my results.  After exchanging a few emails, we spoke on the phone.  It was extremely helpful to talk through the process and my experience with the person who knows these lids best!  I was happy with my final results (especially for my first try) and have the sense that I have a pretty good handle on their usage going into next year.  Brad was not as happy about my results- he knows these lids perform even better and therefore wanted to give me some further advice to ensure even better results next year.

After talking with Brad, here are some streamlined concepts I want to remember for next year's canning projects:

*  There are two times that you tighten the metal ring on each jar when canning with Tattler Lids- once before it goes into the canner and then again after it comes out.  The "before" needs to be significantly looser than the "after" and is the "turn" that is most different than using metal lids.  The ways I want to remember this "before" metal ring adjusment are as follows...

~ Aim for the loose end of the finger-tip tight spectrum.  The definition of "finger-tip tight" might mean slightly different things to different people, but if you can imagine everyone's definitions of finger-tip tight, aim for the loose end of that spectrum.  One way to get a sense of this tightness, according to Brad, is to look on the top of the Tattler Lid at the space between the metal ring and the lid as you turn the metal band.  When the space closes between them and the metal band comes against the Tattler Lid, stop.

~ Another way to familiarize yourself with this concept is to place water in a jar, place a Tattler lid on top and then a metal ring.  Then turn it upside down over your sink.  If no water comes out, loosen the metal band slightly and try again.  Keep doing this until it starts to leak water.  Then tighten it slightly- just to stop the leaking.  Note how tight the band is on at this point by slightly loosening and tightening the band to get the feel for how loosely the band is threaded.  Aim for that when tightening the metal ring before putting your jar in the canner on canning day.

~  If you happen to make the metal band too tight before placing it in the canner, it can lead to a doming effect that can mess with your sealing success.  If a jar comes out of the canner domed up instead of dipped down (the lid's natural state) it means you tightened it too tight.  Air was not able to escape and pressure is trapped inside.  This can happen to metal lids, too, and can mean a sudden release of pressure that can make hot contents escaping, causing a burn.  Looser is better.

*  As soon as the jar comes out of the canner, tighten the metal ring to the tight end of the finger-tip tight spectrum.  This means (with a towel, of course, because the jar will be hot) using both hands and securely making the band press down on the lid.  No need to crank down as hard as you can.  Just tighten it down so the metal band presses the plastic lid firmly into the rubber ring.

* Watch Brad's own very helpful video. I watched a couple other videos on their site before canning applesauce, but missed this one.  It's the most helpful one in my opinion.  It can be found on the front page of their website or can be watched right here:

If you're new to canning, I recommend learning on Tattler Lids right from the start.  They're no more difficult to get the hang of than metal lids are for new canners.  If you can learn from these from the start, you won't have to make adjustments to your canning practices later.

If you're a veteran canner, I recommend learning how to use Tattler Lids.  Friends, we can and do learn new tricks all the time.  We learned how to can in the first place didn't we?  One reason I can comfortably recommend them is because of the quality of customer service available.  These folks believe in their product and the president will even patiently wait when asked to hold while you console a screaming child.  Why do they always act up when we're on the phone?

Part of me is glad every year that the canning season is over.  That's a pretty large part of me, actually.  But I'm already having a little fun setting aside my Tattler Lids and rubber rings after they come off our applesauce jars.  Those lids will end up on jars of tomato sauce, peaches, salsa and more- not in the trash.

Nice.

Giveaway! TWO lucky commenters will each win a box of a dozen regular sized Tattler Lids AND a dozen wide mouth Tattler Lids thanks to the generous Tattler folks.  To enter, leave a comment telling me how many years you've been canning (zero is a valid answer!). Please one entry per household.  It is most helpful if you can leave me your first name or some initials so I can identify you if you win.  I will draw two winners randomly on Friday afternoon.

Happy entering and I'm so curious to see how many years of combined canning experience we have between us!

Also, I am having  SO MUCH fun giving away cookbooks!  I've given 5 (make that 6!) away so far- read here for more details. Pin It

  2. Well.... if you count helping my mom with canning as a youngster, I guess I could say about 60 years. But in all honesty, I have regularly used water bath canning for about 35 years. In 2010 when I first became really concerned about where our country seems to be headed, I purchased my first pressure canner. Since then, I have canned just about any and everything our family would eat. It is so easy I don't know why I put it off for all those years. Having Tattler lids would make it even easier. That is another thing I have put off but now is the time. I really need to get some of these lids in my pantry. Jane, thank you for your post. I have been following for several months now and have learned much and enjoy your fresh, honest outlook. I thank God for you and others like you who are willing to share with us. 12. Although I helped my mother when I was young and I just turned 50, I would say that I have been canning for approximately 23 years in my own home. Thank you for taking the time to try and explain Tattler Lids. I have considered them but haven't been using up my supply of metal lids. Maybe it is time to give them a try.

  13. This was my first all out canning year. I have "helped" my Granny many many years ago, and a couple of years ago did some jam. However, this year we decided to put in a very large garden and go for it. At a few points, I was beginning to wonder if I would ever be done with all the tomatoes and pears!

  15. Awesome post! I read the other two as well and your experiences will be helpful in the future for sure. I've been canning about 5 years and have done a bit more each year. I canned peaches, pears, spicy dilly beans and sweet gherkins (still trying out recipes) this year on top of all the usual stuff (jam, applesauce and tomatoes, etc.). Thanks for sharing the info!

  29. I have been canning for many years, even as far back as using parafin on my jelly! I have used Tattler lids and have had good success with tightening them finger tight and loosening them 1/4 inch. Then, as you stated, tightening them when they come out. 35. After a 25 year hiatus I borrowed a canner to experiment. (wanted to see if I could make jam that set up well) This past summer there was a bounty of free raspberries and pears (thanks to good friends) so I made jam. Wow- seedless is a lot of work so only made 1 batch of that and also tried Mavis's recipe for vanilla pear jam. Everything tasted so good so I then made peach and spiced nectarine jam. My friends and I are enjoying the jams. I hope to make holiday cookies with some soon.

This post could not have been more timely, for just last night as we were driving home from dropping our daughter off at college, my husband and I were reminiscing about how delicious our mothers' canned goods tasted while we were growing up. We agreed we want to begin learning how to can, and since all good Pacific Northwesters (and Mennonites!) practice the mantra of reduce, reuse and recycle, these Tattler Lids will get us off to a great start! (It also helps my husband is a professional cook). Thank you for the opportunity, Jane! Grace & peace, Jennifer D.

  98. Canning was a family affair growing up -- we "put up" applesauce, tomatoes and BUSHELS of pickles. (We loved dill pickles and went through at least a quart a week!) As an adult, I have been canning for over 25 years, although not every year. Some years were just too hectic with new babies and life in general. This year, for the first time, I canned grape and apple juice to use for jelly later. I had been investigating Tattler lids myself before your attempts this year, and was so thrilled to be able to "watch" you try them. I'm hoping to give them a try myself. LOVE your blog -- keep up the inspiration!

  105. I can't believe I have been canning for 7 years already. I have really been debating getting the Tattler lids because of the cost since I can 400-600 jars a year. Chela

  106. Thank you for your post about these lids! I have been canning for 3 years and am starting to feel some angst with the buildup of metal lids in my drawer...I would love to give the tattler lids a try. Thanks so much!

  107. I just started using a pressure canner this year. My dad bought me a really nice one a few years ago but I've always be too afraid of it to use it! I've enjoyed using it so far, now that I've gotten used to using it. I'd love to try the Tattler lids. Thanks.

  108. I've been canning for 31 years! That does not seem possible. I was in college , my husband was pastoring his first church . A wonderful Titus woman took the time to teach me one summer. I have seen the tattler lids but to be honest I have been afraid to use them because canning is a lot of work to take a chance on them not sealing. Thanks for your post .

  109. Well canning on my own with my own equipment in my first apartment after graduating college etc would be 1979, so 34 years. Before that was always canning with mother and other relatives. That I can remember as far back as 8 starting with shelling peas or shocking corn , fetching and carrying but probably really spending most of the time playing with cousins at that age.

  112. Zero years. I purchased jars and equipment with intentions this fall. Did grow up with mamaw's canned produce. Especially enjoyed those green beans. Sharon

  113. I have been canning for 16 years, beginning slowly with applesauce then to salsa and tomatoe products. Now, the canning season never seems to end with all the ideas on blogs and such. Canberry jelly is the lastest I read about. So break out those lids and rings and keep on canning, Jane!

Just a friendly reminder, if you know me personally please try to refrain from using my name. There are those who may try to locate me, break into my pantry and steal my pickled beets. Thanks:-).
