Little Orley Stories & A Giveaway!

The Give Away is over- Congratulations, SHANNON!

I think it can be tough to find listening and reading material of good quality for my kids. I find that the longer ago the book was published, the safer we are when it comes to quality of content. So much that is put out there for kids to read and listen to today is either much too old for the age targeted or twaddle. But that's just my opinion.

That said, I can't believe I haven't written about the Little Orley Stories before now. These stories were created and narrated by Hugh "Lumpy" Brannum (also know as "Uncle Lumpy") for a radio program in the late 1940's. I know about these treasures because my dad and his brother listened to these weekly radio programs when they were boys. Hugh Brannum went on to join the cast of Captain Kangaroo as Mr. Green Jeans.

Uncle Lumpy is on the left.

The Little Orley Stories tell of the amazing adventures of a little boy on his farm. The stories are narrated in many different voices with instrumental accompaniment. We have all the CDs and the children LOVE them. At the end of each story is often a little lesson or moral, some quite amusing. These stories are wholesome, entertaining (some told in rhyme) and often very funny- even for adults. I've made tapes of our CDs for friends and have given these CDs as birthday gifts. They are a fun listen for all ages.

There are three Little Orley Stories CDs out there (Little Orley Stories, More Little Orley Stories and Little Orley Radio Shows)- all carried by Red Hen Books and Toys.

Click here to listen to three entire Little Orley Stories. Go ahead! Go give them a listen and come back. I'll wait.

THE GIVEAWAY:

Now, here's the fun part...while I was getting ready to publish this post, I thought how fun it would be to give away one of these marvelous CDs. I contacted the good folks at Red Hen Books and Toys and they said they would be happy to give the winner of this drawing their choice of one of these Little Orley Stories CDs! Thank you Red Hen Books and Toys!

To be entered in this giveaway, leave a comment telling me who you would give your copy of Little Orley Stories if you win. Once the winner is identified, they will need to tell me which CD they would like and provide me with their address, so that Red Hen Books and Toys can mail them their free CD. Only one entry per household. If you enter anonymously, please leave your initials or some way for me to identify you. I will randomly draw the winner sometime on Thursday!

  3. Now that's what I'm talking about...:) thanks for this link! I'll be sure to try these with the boys.
We tried to listen to 'green Knowe' last night, but everyone fell asleep- me included, but what I heard was good, and I can't wait to go back to it.
I like having a good read-aloud, but I also love having a story recording for a change of pace.
    Thanks!

  7. I had to comment on this as auditory learning as a reinforcement of good instruction and parenting at home is so often overlooked. This is a highly valuable way to teach kids and redeem the time, using every moment to capture their heart and cultivate a culture in the home of beautiful values and Biblical truths. When my first born arrived, my number one item on the baby gift list was a tape recorder (CD's weren't popular yet) and some tapes with quality music, good stories, and Bible stories. It was a huge blessing for them. (We wore out several tape players and graduated to CD players). My younger ones still love to listen to these!

  8. As much as I'd want to keep them for my kids, I think I'd have to give them to my mom. She loved Little Orley and I've actually thought about buying the CDs for her. I remember her reciting Little Orley and His Adventures As A Worm for us. The old record she memorized it off of is so worn that it doesn't play anymore. If I don't win - thanks for the reminder, anyway!

  10. You are so cool! I love your giveaways (esp since I actually won the last one - thanks, by the way - the blender is really cool!). I would love to have one for my kids - they really like audiobooks of The Magic Treehouse, and I am happy to hear of another audiobook that they would likely enjoy.

  11. I am looking forward to listening to the three stories with our grandson to see what he thinks of them. We have been looking for a something to replace the music he loves to listen to while falling asleep and this might just be it. Thanks for the great idea. So yes, I would love to get one of these for the grandson.:)

  14. Throw my name in the hat too. We listen to books on CD on all our roads trips to the National Parks located throughout the western US. Then we pass them along to other families like ours. By the way if you're ever interested in listening to the CS Lewis "Chronicles of Narnia" series check out the Focus on the Family multi CD production. It kept us spellbound through three different road trips over the course of a year. Robin

Just a friendly reminder, if you know me personally please try to refrain from using my name. There are those who may try to locate me, break into my pantry and steal my pickled beets. Thanks:-).
