No Storm Can Shake My Inmost Calm

Well, this year's garden is kind of lousy.  A number of things didn't start well for us, a few of them did but now look pretty wimpy.  The recent heat and windstorm knocked many things on their rear-ends, including our favorite tree which provided shade for much of the yard where the kids like to play.  Oh, and our pet chicken, Hilda?  She disappeared three days after I wrote this post.

 After

And that's just the yard and the animals.  A friend of mine is making a choice that pains me and I feel helpless.  It's a dry and trying time these days and I'm having trouble staying focused on tasks that are important to me.  While I still have SO much to be thankful for, it's easy to get discouraged.

On Sunday, a wonderful woman at our church shared about how she stood outside her front door and watched the fierce wind bend a large oak tree.  Because of it's deep roots, the wind bent it, but did not pull it out.  I can relate to this analogy this week.  As life bends me in all sorts of directions, I know I'm rooted, clinging to the Rock.

I don't know what's going on for you this week, but I pray that you will remain rooted in your faith.  That you will be able to flex and bend with the troubles of this world (and your life) and not be uprooted.  I pray that you will remain a light.  Not because you're not overwhelmed, but because you are and you're still able to shine.

My Life Flows On
(How Can I Keep From Singing)
Robert Lowry

My life flows on in endless song
Above earth's lamentation.
I catch the sweet though far-off hymn
That hails a new creation.
No storm can shake my inmost calm
While to that rock I'm clinging.

Since Love is Lord of heav'n and earth,
How can I keep from singing?

Through all the tumult and the strife,
I hear that music ringing.
It finds an echo in my soul.
How can I keep from singing?

No storm can shake my inmost calm
While to that rock I'm clinging.

Since Love is Lord of heav'n and earth,
How can I keep from singing?

What though my joys and comforts die?
The Lord my Savior liveth.
What though the darkness gather 'round?
Songs in the night he giveth.
No storm can shake my inmost calm
While to that rock I'm clinging.

Since Love is Lord of heav'n and earth,
How can I keep from singing?

The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart,
a fountain ever springing!
All things are mine since I am his!
How can I keep from singing?
No storm can shake my inmost calm
While to that rock I'm clinging.

Since Love is Lord of heav'n and earth,
How can I keep from singing?

  2. Looks like an MDS project! At times like this, it is a blessing to have the church family to gather around being Christ in action. I have no idea how people make it without.

I always tell myself, "This too shall pass. But please make it sooner rather than later!" :D I do know God's timing is not my timing. However I do wonder what lesson I am not learning and wouldn't it be easier to just send a note? I trust God has a sense of humor. God and humor is the only way to get through the tough times, for me anyway.

  3. Staying rooted in your faith is the only way to keep your sanity in trying times. I will be in prayer that God will bless your family for clinging to him in these times. Something that always helps keep me positive is to count my blessings! I often go around singing the old hymn " count your blessings name them one by one, count your blessings and see what God has done". It reminds that he is faithful and always provides. :) i hope this coming week is better for you!

  5. I am crying as I read your post. I'm grieving too about our friend and the decision she has made. I'm still awestruck and terrified by the storm that we had and its amazing destruction. I'm grateful for the way that L shared such a beautiful analogy so that we could make sense out of the storm. Of course.... our roots, being flexible, it all makes sense. And I always get emotional when singing "My Life Flows On". You've caught me in a particularly vulnerable moment tonight, as our electricity just came back on this afternoon after being without for nearly 72 hours. It has been a very emotional 72 hours. But through it all, I'm grateful (oh so grateful) for the dear friends and family who have helped me remember that the peace of Christ is a constant blessing.

  6. I couldn't help thinking of your little tree nursery you posted about a few weeks back...I hope the baby walnut wasn't destroyed so it can take over the job of shading your home. God bless you through this trying time.

  7. Just wanted to send prayers and hugs your way. I enjoy your blog and your canning recipes. We do have a wonderful God and while he doesn't keep us from hard times he is always there to help us through them.

  8. You have no idea how far a post like this can reach....I'm sure you've touched countless hearts (including mine). My storms are not the same that your friend has faced, but your post helped remind me to stay rooted in my faith and able to face my own situations. Thank you so much for not only a blog that I've enjoyed for some time (found it for the recipes and canning info), but heartfelt posts that help us shine even when we are troubled. God bless!

  13. Living in the northeast, we rarely get destructive storms and it is hard sometimes to relate to what is going on all over the country with the fires and hurricanes and wind. Your post has touched me in how you live it out and how you can relate it to your faith and being able to flex and bend with your troubles and not be uprooted. I am so sorry for what nature has done to your yard, but encouraged that your faith is strong and He will see you through it!

  16. Thank you for sharing this post. I know what it's like to be tossed to and fro these past few days as well. I'm clinging to the Rock of My Salvation Jesus Christ. Although at times it still hurts, I can feel His loving arms around me. I know you are doing the same.

    Blessings,

Just a friendly reminder, if you know me personally please try to refrain from using my name. There are those who may try to locate me, break into my pantry and steal my pickled beets. Thanks:-).
