Today

Today, it snowed.  And snowed and snowed and snowed.  This is our first real snow of the winter and the kids are outside enjoying it immensely- even though Miriam needs the bigger kids to make paths for her so that she can walk anywhere.

Today, I feel better.  After three days of feeling awful, I am feeling almost myself.  I am thankful for antibiotics, teacher-sick-days, and a husband who gets up in the middle of the night to fetch me medicine.  It gets me every time how much feeling better feels...well, better!

Today, I made cookies (a true sign I'm on the up and up).  I thought the kids deserved a treat after a few days of mild neglect.  Sam bagged warm ones and went traipsing through the snow to deliver some to neighbors.

Today, I am dreaming of garden planning (in spite of the snow).  Jamey and I are hoping to sit down and plan the garden tomorrow night.  He with his binder and me with my canning journal.  We'll discuss what we want and what we don't, what we need more of and less of.  We're hoping to streamline even more this year and try our hand at tilling our garden after years of using the mulch/non-tiller method.  More on that to come.

Today, I am also dreaming of blueberries.  My birthday isn't until June, but I told Jamey the only thing I wanted was blueberry bushes.  He bought ten plants and soon, they'll be finding their way into the ground at the end of the sunflower patch.

Today, despite all this goodness, my heart is heavy for friends going through really difficult times.  How I wish I could share more than just my thoughts and prayers.

I am ever so thankful for today. Pin It

  1. Jane, I have been reading your blog for over a year now and just love it. Am sorry you were sick but am happy to hear you are on the mend. Praise God. All that snow sounds exciting. We were supposed get part of that storm (we live between Doylestown & Easton, PA) but nothing yet, except for a few minutes of rain. We just moved here from the south a few months ago & we have been hoping for a nice amount of snow for the kids to sleigh ride for more than a day. :-)

Anyway, am looking forward to reading more on your garden planning. This will be our 1st year gardening and am feeling overwhelmed with what to plant next to what and so on. It has been a help looking at some of your recent & older posts on the subject. Keep 'em coming!

    In Him,
    Dawn

PS, I wanted to say that I am so sorry for your recent loss. May God comfort you and your family at this time.

  3. I've been reading for a good while, too. I very much enjoy reading about your days and your joys. Something a little melancholy in this post just made me want to reach out. I am glad to hear you are feeling better. Hope things keep looking up...and that your blueberry harvest is bountiful! :-)

  4. Ugh. Sorry to hear you've been battling some ugly germs, but am glad you're now feeling better. Remember to take it a little easy for a while because you need a little time to get totally back up to snuff!

Blueberry bushes for your birthday are a wonderful present. I'm not much of a wild berry picker but I sure do love our domestic blueberries, strawberries and raspberries. The blueberry bushes require less care and upkeep than either of the others. Ours tend to bear heavy one year and then not so much the next. Last year was a not so much year and we didn't have nearly enough to make it through winter. I have about 1-1/2 cups of the little jewels left in the freezer and have been hesitating using them because . . . well, then they will be gone!

So many people are going through such difficulties now. I'm saying a prayer for your friends along with others I know of who are suffering.

  6. Glad to hear you're feeling well enough to make cookies. It can be tough for a mom to be sick...the household just keeps going with or without you.

I'm excited to hear about your blueberries. They are on my list for next year, along with huckleberries. This year I'm growing strawberries for the first time.

When you feel all the way better, I hope that you write more about your decision to till your garden.

God bless you. You blog helps me stay grounded in Christ.

  7. Thank you for taking time to share your life with us. I just recently found you and am enjoying reading. I've been praying for you and your family this past week. I am intrigued by your canning journal. Would you explain a little more the what and how of it? Thanks!
    God's peace to your home

  8. I, too, am interested in why you are choosing to till again. Be prepared for lots of weeds. I tilled a path in front of my flower garden surrounding the house last year. I was trying to make the border between the garden and the lawn more apparent. Anyway, I ended up with an actual weed strip where I tilled. It just loosened up the soil which proved to be the perfect bed for growing weeds. I am an expert at successfully growing all types of weeds!

I'm glad you're feeling better. I was down for a day this week, too. It really is amazing how good you feel after being sick. It's a good thing because of all the work that's waiting for you. :)

  9. Our neighbors planted their garden two weeks ago!!! Now it is nestled all warm under all this snow. I'm so not in this mindset yet! Bec

  10. Oops, OK; I just found your entry about journals from 2010. I never really thought about keeping up with it like that but it sure makes a lot of sense ~ especially with my memory ;>

  11. I'm so excited to find your blog and want to have a garden this year, but I live in the midwest where the past two summers have been so hot that it wasn't safe for my grandbabies to play outside at certain times of the day. How should I deal with the extreme heat and a smaller garden area? Container gardening?

    1. Lynda, hello!

I'm sorry, but I have no experience gardening in your climate, so I won't begin to give you any advice. I would suggest, though, that you determine your plant hardiness zone (on a site like this one: http://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/PHZMWeb/) and then do a search for gardening in that particular zone. I imagine there are others in your zone making it work one way or another who may have websites or blogs and could be of help. You could also search for vegetables that do well in your zone. Plant nurseries in your area could also give you some direction. I'm sorry I can't be of more help, but am excited for you to learn what works and try your hand(s) at gardening:-).

  13. In WI we can't wait for the snow to disappear:) It's been a long, snowy winter~ but after a hot, dry summer we shouldn't start complaining.

I, too, am interested in your theory to go back to tilling rather than mulching, as we were considering doing the opposite this summer.

My prayers for you and your friends today~ just knowing that your heart is breaking along with theirs is often times the best comfort you can bring them. If it is any help I have some free books available on my website about our faith walk and trusting God through hard times. I would be happy to mail one out. Terri
