Can It Be?

I am in a bit of shock because for the first time in awhile, I have a quiet week laid before me.

Last week was a bit of a whirlwind getting ready for company this past weekend.  You know- cooking, cleaning, weeding, along with all the regular stuff.  It's good we have company that stays at our house every once in awhile.  It's the only thing that inspires deep cleaning around here.  And by deep cleaning, I'm talking about pulling out the couches and collecting all the toys, snack cups, clothes, trash and dust bunnies that gather underneath.   It means washing windows.  It means scrubbing tubs until they shine and washing walls and baseboards (using just a rag, some dish detergent and water).  Have you ever washed walls before?  This past week was my first time and I was blown over by the results- especially in the kitchen.  I didn't think my walls were dirty.  I mean, I saw a few finger prints, but after I washed them (only from child height down) I couldn't believe the difference.

Our weekend was full and fun.  In addition to eating great food (everyone contributed), family helped pick, snap and freeze green beans.  They also helped me make another huge batch of pesto (11 cups).  We sat on the front porch after a cold front (finally!) came through and watched deer at the foot of the next hill over.  There was foosball playing (kids against grandparents at times), celebrating Miriam's first birthday with shoofly cupcakes and noisy toys (which she loves), sitting in the backyard until dark and lots of conversation with children to watch and babies to hold.  The service at church was very nice and now, we're officially members of our new church and Miriam has been dedicated.

After all this and the few busy weeks prior, as good as it all was, an empty week is like the rain that we experienced on Friday after over three weeks of heat and dryness.  It's a relief.  It will be welcomed rest.  There will be a little laundry.  A lot of reading books, just being, and (thanks to the many leftovers that family graciously left with us) very little cooking.

A few tomatoes are trickling into the house and our mouths.  Some corn will be picked later this week, but that, too, will get eaten promptly.  I need to relish this week because before long a lot of corn, tomatoes, peaches and nectarines will be coming my way and I'm going to need all the energy reserves I can get.

Manic Monday?  Not this week. Pin It

  3. ok...i've LOVED the preserving posts you've done lately (most, if not ALL have made it to my archives!)

I need a bit of Making-pesto-for-Dummies of a tutorial though. I realize you posted how to MAKE pesto (and I can't wait....3 of my 9 basil plants are calling me.) I've made pesto before with a ton of basil from my mom's garden...but I didn't harvest it! Soooo...how do I cut it from the plant so that I can harvest more later in the season???

    HELP oh basil expert!!! :)

  4. I love restful weeks! I am having one myself too! We are visiting my husband's family for the week. They live in rural Arkansas. We decided to transport our ducks we think they will prefer living where there are ponds. I'll miss them though. We still have our chickens! Enjoy your week!

  5. We are so pleased that your family has joined our church! I wanted to give you an official welcome hug yesterday but didn't get a chance. Consider yourself hugged. :-) It was neat to see your extended family all lined up around you in church.

  6. Christy, I just take a few "branches" from each plant at a time to start. Some new growth may start from where you've trimmed. I take from them pretty hard, leaving just a branch or two on each plant so I will still have fresh basil for tomato sauce later in the summer. Keep snipping off the flowers, though. Once they go to seed, I've found they stop making new leaves.

I hope this is the kind of info. you still needed. If not, ask again:-).

  7. DEFINITELY what i was looking for. wondering how much to take. I've been trying to stay on top of those blasted flowers. 2 of the basil plants are large bushes now, so I've gotta do something with them soon....i'm NOT complaining. I love picking off the flowers though. My hands smell heavenly....

Just a friendly reminder, if you know me personally please try to refrain from using my name. There are those who may try to locate me, break into my pantry and steal my pickled beets. Thanks:-).
