Blueberry (or Peach, or Strawberry) Frozen Yogurt

The timing was perfect. Ever since I saw the recipe for Blueberry Frozen Yogurt over at Simply Recipes, I knew I had to make it. We always have yogurt on hand and I knew that soon we'd have blueberries, too. Being set to make it coincided perfectly with a visit from my dear cousin and her family. I knew what we were having for dessert. Yes, I did.

I adore my cousin. We are both the oldest of five and are only 6 months apart in age. When our families got together while we were growing up, we immediately paired off and picked up right where we left off the last time, even if we hadn't seen each other for months. She is married and has two children now, a boy and a girl (close to Sam and Sadie's ages). They live far away, so it was so special to have them stop in during their summer travels to see us and where we live.

Our kids played ball together. Sam and Sadie took them in the hen house and they walked single file through the chicken run, acting like chickens. The boys collected eggs. The girls added new caterpillars and leaves to Sadie's butterfly habitat and the boys threw toys up into the trees so the daddies had to throw balls into the trees to knock them down. We shared dinner and conversation and once again, it was as if very little time passed between our meetings. As soon as they left Sam said, "When will we see them again?" and "I wish they could sleep over."

Cousin, your family is beautiful and so are you- inside and out.

Click here for the Blueberry Frozen Yogurt recipe. I followed it exactly (using the maximum recommended sugar amount) and it was delicious. We turned it in the ice cream maker earlier in the afternoon and let it firm up in the freezer for an hour or two before serving- the consistency was perfect. When I make it next time, I will cut back a bit on the lemon juice to make it slightly less tart. This frozen yogurt is packed with blueberries. It is wonderful. If you have blueberries, please give it a try. I also look forward to making it with crushed frozen strawberries and fresh peaches (see below for an Update).

Combine the blueberries, sugar, lemon juice, salt and cinnamon in a pot, cooking it until the sugar has melted and crushing the blueberries with a potato masher. Then, you let it cool a bit.

Next, you add whole milk yogurt and whole milk, stirring it all together. Refrigerate it until cold and then process in your ice cream maker.

And, yes. It really turns this purple. No food dyes here. Blueberries are glorious.

Update 8/26/09: Since this post, we have made this frozen yogurt with blueberries, strawberries (substitute the strawberries for blueberries and omit the cinnamon), peaches (with the cinnamon) and we are about to try it with red raspberries. Every time, no matter what the fruit- incredibly delicious!! Pin It

  1. Mmm, that looks so good! We are off to the cabin for the weekend where there is a LARGE wild blueberry patch. We always pick a whole bunch. I think this recipe might be on the menu upon our return home!

  3. Much delayed, but your post had me beaming. Not to mention the visit which was a highlight for my whole family. I have memories to cherish...and recipes that I can't wait to repeat. The blueberry ice cream couldn't wait, even though I had to use store bought blueberries. Thank-you!!! Blessings as you become intimate with your to do list, hope you find some creative ways to tackle it! Maybe Sadie could mobilize her caterpillars!

Just a friendly reminder, if you know me personally please try to refrain from using my name. There are those who may try to locate me, break into my pantry and steal my pickled beets. Thanks:-).
